Our Story

Carol and Chloé are a mother and daughter duo, founders of Ottie & Roo.

We work here in rural North Dorset in a small village near Shaftesbury, from a purpose built studio in our garden with beautiful inspiring views over the countryside.

Chloé completed a BA in Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth university and specialised in ceramics. Since graduating from Falmouth, Chloé has been busy crafting away in their studio and illustrating that of what she is surrounded by daily- her bantam chicken Rosie (who likes to perch on the studio roof whilst Chloé is crafting) and her woodland animal collection. This is all incorporated into Ottie & Roo ceramics, be it imprints into pots or cut out into decorations for the home. Chloe does this whilst also working as a primary school teacher in a little rural village school, where she shares her passion of ceramics with her class. You will see Chloé's class guinea pigs, Fungus and Phoebe popping up in a few of her designs.

Carol's journey started with supplying Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols with handmade accessories, this was before she had her family. As they left home she returned to crafts in which she engraved slate gifts, which you can still find on our shop page, along with our handcrafted ceramic gifts. Carols craft has evolved into ceramics, through self taught exploration, into slip casting and hand building, organically shaped tableware. Also from Chloé's hand drawn designs, Carol has crafted these into Christmas decorations and decorations for the home.

The two work together in their studio in Dorset to create beautiful handmade ceramics, both inspired by the natural world. You will find woodland creatures and flora adorned to their ceramics pieces.

Carol's engraved slate

Carol has hand cut natural slate to make unique signs and gifts for the home. The signs are then sealed with an Outdoor Danish Oil which gives the slate an attractive, dark sheen. Carol then engraved through the Danish oil leaving the wording on the slate in its natural state.

When making a slate used for food, it is sealed with food safe oil covering the wording that has been engraved, so it is safe to use for food.
